Levi's® Vintage Clothing 1944 501 Rough Rinse

During World War II, to comply with wartime rationing requirements, Levi Strauss & Co. simplified the features of the 501. To save metal, fabric and thread for the war effort, the cinch back was removed, along with the watch pocket rivets and crotch rivets. What's more, the trademark arcuate stitching design was no longer sewn on, but instead painted on by hand. Dye rationing meant that the heavy-duty 10oz red ID line shrink to fitt xx denim used in 1944 was a softer shade of indigo, offset by the one sided Caital E red tab introduced in 1936. The jean was riveted in a mixture of plain and stamped metal, and the LS&Co. logo no longer appeared on the fly buttons. Instead, the waistband button was engraved with a symbol of peace in the form of a laurel leaf. The laurel leaf is widely used to symbolize the triumph of the human spirit.

Levi's® Vintage Clothing 1947 501 Jeans Rigid

The 1947-501® jean is regarded as the definitive five-pocket jean and the quintessential 501® model. Levi's® jeans had been in short supply during the years of World War II, when several key features were removed to save vital metal and fabric. By 1947, the newly restored 501® jean was in huge demand. 


The stitched arcuate returned to the two back pockets: stitched with a double-needle machine, it now formed a diamond shape at the point where the two lines meet. Original Levi's® zinc buttons also enjoyed a comeback. But the crotch rivet, cinch-back and suspender buttons had been put out to pasture - permanently. Instead, belt loops and concealed copper rivets became standard. 


Made with Red XX Selvage using Cone Mills' deep tone indigo, the color blossoms with age in the purest redcast indigo. The 1947-501® jeans continued the tradition of a big "E" on the (single-stitched) red Tab, plus the Two Horse leather patch.

Originally launched as a cheaper alternative to the 501 jeans. It was made from what was perceived at the time to be a lower grade fabric, hence the number 2(01). The characteristic black painted donut suspender buttons, the linen 201 cloth patch and the higher curved Arcuate differentiate these jeans from the 501 jeans at this time.

Levi's® Vintage Clothing 1954 501Z Jeans Rigid

The 1950's brought a rebellious youth revolution in which icons such as Marlon Brando gave denim, and particular the 501, an iconic status. In the mid 1950's Levi Strauss & Co. became a national phenomenon. In order to make potential consumers comfortable with the company's products, LS&Co. introduced a zipper version of the button fly shrink to fit jeans in 1954: the 501Z. It had everything longtime wearers loved: the silhouette, the tough but flexible fabric, rivets, etc. Retailers carried both the 501 and its zippered brother, the 501Z, and everyone got the pair of Levi's jeans that worked best for them.
